Small Steps...

So most of you already know that I work in a preschool program with children that have Autism. I just wanted to let you all know, that I love my job. Really, no sarcasm involved.

When I was in college I had several professors tell me about things a teacher can and will encounter, and I never, EVER believed some of the things they were telling me. Well, now I've seen my fair share!

I guess I just never knew that some children needed to be taught how to play, how to associate with others, how to sit for more than 3 seconds without having a meltdown or even how to show emotion. But some do. And I get to be part of it all. And I love it!

Yes there are times that are rough, everyday. Everyday I ask myself if this is where I actually belong in this life. The answer at the end of the every day is the same, yes I do. I do belong here, I am making a difference in the life of someone, somehow, every single day.

I'm not out changing the world, I'm no superhero, they probably will never even know that I, yep me, impacted their life.

But you see, one small step after another leads to a bigger step. Today we learned how to put a ball in a toy, tomorrow we will learn how to push the button to make it work, on Friday we will put the two together and we actually played with a toy. It doesn't seem significant to some, but you see this child is 4 years old, and has never played (this of course is not speaking of 1 particular child, I am speaking of many children with Autism).

Some boys turn 5 years old and have never pushed a car. Most children are pushing cars, or a slinky, or whatever toy they have around, all over the place, they just do it because they see that it has wheels, or movable parts, so it should be pushed. Unfortunately not all children make the connection, some children, see that toy, see that is is movable, yet never touch it, because they don't know that it is "supposed" to be pushed, or pulled, or slung down the stairs.

My dream is that ALL children diagnosed with Autism have the opportunity to be diagnosed early in life and get accepted to wonderful preschools for early intervention - just like the one I work in!

So here's to small steps, because they actually do lead to bigger steps...

Things I Love the Most:

Things that I love the most:

The way Meagan says I love you, it melts my heart, oh and
the once I year I get to see my nephews, because I miss them so much!

The smell of honeysuckle when the spring wind blows,
and how the sunlight heats my face.

The feeling of falling in love, and the hard work it takes to stay there.

Post-It notes, school supplies, new pens and pink erasers.

Pouring my heart out on this blog, and not caring who reads it because it is who I am.

Books for kids, books for adults, books about life, books about love and books on self-improvement.

Laughter, the kind that makes you cry or pee in your pants, laughing at the silly things life holds and at the mistakes I make.

The way a child's face lights up when they realize they do "get it", and knowing that I helped them get there.

Instant gratification, even if it takes a while to get.

Peanut M&M's and decorated cupcakes, but most of all enjoying them with a friend.

The way he pushes my buttons since I'm so cute when I'm angry, and then we laugh.

Having a tiny hand in mine as we walk to the park, when you know you are their protector and guide, and somehow they know they are yours.

The smell of suntan lotion in the summer, the sun at the beach, and the pages of an old book.

Good friends, the kind you consider your family, the ones that don't leave when times are rough, the ones that don't disappear when life goes off course, the ones that don't quit or let you quit when you are tired.

Crossword puzzles, learning new words and their meanings, and then using them in a sentence so someone else can learn them too.

Most of all, I love life, I love the little things in life, the big things in life, the dreams that do come true, the fairy tale that awaits and knowing that God does have a plan, even if I don't know the outcome, I know - that my life is the way it is for a reason.

About Me

My photo
I have big and small dreams and believe in the fairy tale ending. I am a pixie and princess, and a tom boy all tied up in one. I am a sister, an aunt, a friend, a daughter. Most of the time I don't know what I really want in life!
